Digital Colors
Hexadecimal

The hexadecimal format is only six characters long. In that sense, it compresses the individual RGB values into one six-digit value that uses a combination of alphanumeric characters including letters and numbers to identify a color. The hexadecimal color values took off because many machines used 8-bit operational codes. In that sense the octet was a reasonable way to represent these types of values.
